Tony Marino writes: The volunteers of Urban Community Development II (UCA II) entered training in mid-August 1964. As a group they were housed in the Hotel Durant , two short blocks from the famous Sather Gate entrance of the University of California at Berkeley. They were originally selected to work and live in the barrios of Caracas but political turmoil in the capital quickly ruled out sending them to the big city. But turmoil was also the operant word for Berkeley in the fall of 64 as the Free Speech Movement erupted half way through UCA II’s stay on campus. Training was extended an additional four weeks as new sites in Venezuela had to be found and some new instructors on campus enlisted to replace those who were swept up in the Free Speech Movement! In late November approximately 35 of the original 65 volunteers arrived in country. Most were assigned to community development projects at sites in eastern Venezuelan towns and cities. Their service ended in mid-August 1966.
